The Sound of Westminster
Radio at the University of Westminster has always been driven by creativity and collaboration. That journey began in 2004 with Smoke Radio – a station run by students, for students.
Over the years, Smoke Radio became one of the most successful student stations in the UK, winning more than 29 Student Radio Awards, including Best Entertainment Event, Best Specialist Music Show and Best Interview. Twice named Best Student Station, the team also brought student broadcasting to a national audience, producing and presenting three early breakfast shows on BBC Radio 1.
Today, that legacy powers Westminster Waves – a new chapter for radio in London.
We are building a dynamic, Ofcom licensed community radio station at the heart of the capital. As the only university in London with a community radio licence, we are creating a platform that goes beyond our campuses serving the half a million students who choose to study in this amazing global city.
Right now, Westminster Waves is developing new programmes and training the next generation of broadcasters.
Looking ahead, our ambition is clear: to become the leading broadcast media service for students living in London and a hub for creative talent and a launchpad for future careers in media.
